Digital Designers, like all facets of a creative industry, have had to evolve. Tried and tested design standards in general are always referenced, but when designing for the web, they’ve had to take into account other factors. User experience is a huge consideration in the design process. Designers are far more 'hands on' in client discussions to help build insights and have also had to learn a few development skills to make sure functionality in the design can be achieved.
Supplying a series of designs on paper or PDF with notes on how things connect and function is a thing of the past. In today’s environment, it’s more appropriate to deliver designs in a working prototype that give the client a far greater understanding of the proposed user experience by allowing them to see it first hand – and early in the process.
Digital Designers don’t just consider how things look in the digital space, but also how the user interacts with the design and ultimately, how a conversion occurs and what role design plays in the sales funnel.
More than ever, it is critical that a Digital Designer is involved in the project from its inception. Decisions that are made at a strategic planning level not only impact design, but the process has become a far greater 2-way street allowing design to have more influence on the technical mechanics and functionality of a digital asset.
The initial designs need to show as much responsiveness as the finished product will eventually become. Designing across multiple devices and therefore potentially creating multiple designs for the same brand and product (because creating one design isn’t difficult enough) is the baseline for good web design. It's not always a straight adaptation of the original design. With the toughest device to design for being the semi-restrictive ‘mobile’ medium, many designers now apply themselves to this medium first and then consider how their designs should be treated on larger devices like tablets, laptops and personal computers.
At The Digital Embassy, our designers are often involved in the initial strategic workshop where many decisions on user experience are often discussed and locked in. From there, many of the wireframes and technical specifications are worked on either with or by the designer to flow seamlessly into the design process. Every step is taken to allow great web design to flourish and deliver on the best user experience possible whilst truly reflecting a brand’s look and tonality across a multitude of display sizes.
