Friday Fact: 10th July

Space - it may be the final frontier, but it's also full of man made satellites

On this day, Friday, 10th July back in 1962, the Telstar Communications satellite was launched. This satellite relayed TV and telephone signals between Europe and the U.S. Whilst Sputnik 1 was the first satellite launched back in 1957, Telstar 1 was the first to successfully transmit TV signals.

Today, there are well over 1,000 satellites in and around Earth's atmosphere at any one time communicating everything from TV & radio, to weather information, to detailed imagery and navigation info streamed directly to your mobile phone. Of course, rounding out this category, there's also the International Space Station and the Hubble Telescope. Hopefully they don't all come crashing down to Earth at once.
