Embassy Gazette

Friday Fact: 3rd July

99% of international data is transmitted via cabling at the bottom of the ocean utilising submarine cables.

On this day (3rd July) in 1903 - The first cable across the Pacific Ocean was spliced between Honolulu, Midway, Guam and Manila. Today, 99% of international data is transmitted via cabling at the bottom of the ocean utilising submarine communications cables. Interestingly, this technology is much older with the first telegraph cable connecting Newfoundland and Ireland laid back in 1854. Whilst much of technology is ever changing, some things are tried and tested. Consider how far that information has had to travel next time you think your internet connection is ‘a little slow’.  (ref: NEC global data & On This Day.)
