The Department of State Development: A Case Study

Water heating accounts for approximately 25% of Australian household energy use so the calculator would assist households in comparing their options when replacing a hot water system, building a new home or just doing research.

The Project

DSD identified the need for a web-based calculator that would allow members of the community to easily calculate their household’s water heater usage. Water heating accounts for approximately 25% of Australian household energy use so the calculator would assist households in comparing their options when replacing a hot water system, building a new home or just doing research.

The Digital Embassy was approached to develop the calculator which had to be simple to use, yet provide the user with an intuitive and engaging experience. Another requirement of the project was to ensure the application was portable, and content in the calculator could be easily maintained by DSD’s appointed personnel with a small amount of training as the values, constants and controls can change over time.

The Calculator

A web-based calculator application was designed to break down a very complex spreadsheet containing hundreds of elements, look-ups, variables and constants into appropriate screens that allow users to enter their information in basic logical steps to obtain their results, or go into more detail if required.

Features

To maintain user engagement the calculator features real time graphing that provides the user with instant feedback. Unique elements were created to capture data - sliders and icon based selection options are featured to make inputs easier instead of the common dropdowns and text boxes.

To allow DSD to manage the constants, variables and controls, the calculator was engineered from the ground up using a CSV document as a configuration file . This allowed a framework to be built as the calculator was developed to provide simple access for administrators to manage the fields and values from a text file.

Final Words

The final product delivered by The Digital Embassy is a truly standalone web-based calculator without any external requirements or databases. Its design architecture has ensured that the calculator will remain portable and can be easily administered by sa.gov.au in the future.
